everywhere we go...

The streets are full of people again. The sunny, hotter days mean that everyone can get outside. And wheelchairs are everywhere… people are being pushed down the street (because the sidewalks are not that smooth or are filled with cars) and people in powered chairs are happily plowing through puddles and racing down the thoroughfares. It’s great to see them out and about, catching the sun’s rays and shopping on their own!

Our community of residence is not very accessible, for the most part. Curbs are huge, and pathways are broken…the people with mobility challenges have it hard. However, it does give us a chance to interact with new people. The other day we were leaving for work on our bikes and saw a woman try to power her wheelchair up a curb that included some makeshift bricks and dirt as a ramp. Unfortunately for her, the wheelchair was too front heavy and the ramp useful only for bikes and motorcycles.

It was mid-morning … so not many people were around. We stopped, Pres man-handled the power chair up the curb (imagine that her back was parallel to the ground at one point). Then the grateful lady was off, heading into our housing complex, where she may or may not live. It was a good start to the day!

On campus we have been listening to and scoring our students’ final oral exams. We just finished up the first half, nearly 300. The second week of June, we will finish the next half. About half of our freshmen give speeches on their daily school life for their spring semester final. Some of our sophomores give persuasive speeches … about healthy eating habits, recycling, careers and big-city living. We learn a lot of things along the way… ! The rest of our students must do some teaching activities that include required pronunciation targets and a song they have created. We always enjoy seeing what they can come up with. We are thankful that many of the students have prepared well and improved their speaking and teaching skills.

Many of our students will go on to teaching internships next year and as we head into the final month of the term, there are a lot of interviews going on. Our college is good about offering a lot of opportunities for employment. We pray that they will do well and have good colleagues that help them in their new environment.

We are getting lots of high-fives as we say goodbye and K gets lots of hugs and some kisses too. Cici, an English major, said, “Thanks for ur help Pres and Spring. U have improved my English. I’m so lucky to meet u. I will miss us so much.”

And Doras, a pre-school education major from class 4, shook Pres’ hand and said, “Thank you for being my teacher. I learned a lot from you.” We are blessed and thankful. Our Father is good! We look forward to another meaningful and productive week as we wrap up exams, record our grades and, God willing, finalize K’s residence permit for the year. Thank you for your prayers!
